DNV green data products

Building the data, models and tools needed to enable the Energy Transition

Solcast's vision was to enable the organisations driving the energy transition - now we're doing that as one of DNV's Green Data Products.

Solcast is one of DNV’s Green Data Products, delivering trusted data, models, and platforms for the global renewable energy industry — modelling energy and power for solar and wind portfolios, and markets all over the world. By joining forces with a multidisciplinary team from across DNV, we bring together deep expertise in forecasting, energy modelling and financing, meteorology, and renewable energy to create data the industry can trust, and solutions the industry can rely on.

Our data underpins the financing, construction, management, and operation of over 650 GW of solar capacity worldwide, while our systems process global weather data every five minutes. From planning new projects to optimising live assets, from feasibility to forecasting we provide the actionable insights that help the organisations who are powering the energy transition.

Solcast was formed in early 2016, the culmination of several years of work by co-founders James Luffman and Dr. Nick Engerer and their team, who saw tremendous opportunity to approach solar modelling and forecasting from their perspectives as meteorologists working with the electricity sector. In January 2023 Solcast was acquired by DNV, and now operates as a DNV company, continuing to provide the data needed to build a solar future at a global scale.

Data, models and products

A connected ecosystem of data

DNV green data products are digital first, supporting the digitisation of the energy industry, as we adapt from a thermal-based - energy on demand model, to capturing and storing energy as we capture weather as the new fuel.

Try the Solcast API

Solcast takes on the many challenges of producing live and forecast solar data, so that you don’t have to. That means making the data easy to access, validate and integrate. We provide instant access to live and forecast data products via this web interface, which is free to try. These include direct estimates of global, direct and diffuse solar radiation, as well as PV power output.
